The Birmingham City Smithfield Masterplan - Market Development

In 2016 Birmingham launched a £500 million plan to create a brand new place for the city. Totalling 14 hectares, the site is one of the largest and most attractive city centre development opportunities in the country.

Located in the heart of the city centre, Birmingham Smithfield will become a unique and vibrant place for people to meet, live and shop.

Working with the City Council and the current market traders, NABMA Market Place were engaged to deliver the market element of the masterplan.

The teams' objective was to create a vibrant market at the heart of Birmingham Smithfield and for it to become the destination of choice for shoppers and visitors to the city.

Key Deliverables

The team engaged with traders from the three sections of the current market offer: indoor, outdoor and rag, to ensure they had input in the future of the market.

They worked alongside architects and Birmingham City Council to design a vibrant market at the heart of Smithfield.

Project outcomes

The consultancy team continues in the market's transition until the delivery of the new venue: a multi-layered site encompassing a mix of uses, offering real opportunities for growing independent businesses and significant economic activity in and around the Smithfield area.

The Birmingham Masterplan document including plans for the market was successfully launched at the international property event, MIPIM in 2016.
